Can Knives Go in the Dishwasher

Can you put knives in the dishwasher?

When it comes to putting knives in the dishwasher, it depends on what kind of knife it is. You can put them in –particularly when it comes to cutlery and the likes – but you may want to wash your more expensive knives by hand. This is because putting sharp knives in the dishwasher can dull them over time, so washing your valuable ones by hand (think those you use for slicing, peeling, chopping!) will keep them sharper for longer.

Which knives can’t you put in the dishwasher?

While dishwashers are undoubtedly the most efficient way to wash your knives, you may want to wash your most valuable knives by hand. These will usually include expensive ones such as carving knives, your best steak knives, and all those that you want to keep particularly sharp. Generally, it’s best to avoid putting ceramic knives in the dishwasher, as they are designed to retain a razor-sharp cutting edge used for tougher tasks.

Do dishwashers blunt all knives?

Dishwashers do tend to blunt sharp knives over time, but this shouldn’t be a massive concern for the cutlery knives you use every day. Plus, we don’t always have time to wash all of our knives by hand – so if you are putting them in the dishwasher, just bear these things in mind:

  • Always separate sharp knives in cutlery baskets: Your best knives should always be kept apart so they don’t come in contact during the wash and dullen.
  • Purchase a dishwasher knife rack: This will ensure that your knives are cleaned effectively and won’t cause the same issues that stacking them in a single basket might.
  • Always place your knives upside down: You should always put your knives blunt side up to avoid any accidents that could happen.
  • Choose the right dishwasher tablets: This will help to bring out the cleaning power of a dishwasher and help to maintain the shine of your sharp knives. We would recommend a Finish Dishwasher Detergent.

Maintaining our knives is an important part of ensuring they last as long as they should, but just washing them properly isn’t enough. We should also look to sharpen our knives regularly and in the proper way to keep them working to their best standard.

How to sharpen your knives

There are two methods best known for sharpening knives – honing and sharpening:

Honing – this is for keeping sharp knives sharp. It evens out imperfections in the blade by correcting the edge. For this, you simply need a honing steel of some kind and the action can be carried out at home. Though it isn’t technically done to sharpen the knife, it will make your knife stay sharp and work better.

Sharpening – This is the action of making a dull blade sharp again. There are many knife sharpening tools out there in order to do this at home. Often however, many people will get this carried out by a professional.

If you do put your knives in the dishwasher, make sure you follow the correct protocol such as keeping them separate, and putting them sharp side down. This way, you can safely preserve their sharpness for as long as possible.
