How to clean a dishwasher filter
Learn about dishwasher filters and how to clean them, from spotting the signs that it’s overdue for a clean to understanding the different filters available.

Your dishwasher filter has two essential functions: it protects the pump from getting clogged or damaged by food debris, and it also helps prevent the remnants of last night’s dinner from recirculating back onto your dishes. This function plays a crucial role in ensuring your dishes and glassware come out virtually spotless.

Types of dishwasher filter: Manual vs Self-cleaning
There are two common filter types:
Manual filters
Manual filters are typically removable and feature a mesh net that catches bits of food. This requires monthly cleaning, or more often depending on usage. If neglected, this can restrict water flow, cause an unpleasant smell, and leave food remnants behind. All these will, of course, hinder the overall clean of your dishwasher. This makes manual dishwasher filter cleaning essential for optimal performance.

Step-by-step guide on how to clean your dishwasher filter
Cleaning your dishwasher filter doesn’t take long, but it makes a big difference in performance. Just follow these simple instructions:
Remove any dishes and the bottom rack from the machine.

Most are located at the base. It should look like a short cylinder with a mesh screen.

Twist to unlock it, then gently remove it from the machine. Some models have two parts: the tube and a flat filter beneath it. Remove both if applicable.

Wash your filter under running water to remove any visible food build-up. You may need to use dish soap and an old, soft sponge to remove any stubborn limescale and food residue. Do this gently as you don’t want to break the filter mesh.

Ensure it is securely back in place before running the next cycle.

Signs you should be cleaning your filter
The filter is often out of sight, out of mind. Being hidden behind the bottom rack of your dishwasher, it is easy to forget to clean your filters regularly. So, if you notice any of these, take it as a sign that it’s time to clean your dishwasher filter:

Food build-up in the filter

Water not draining properly

An unpleasant smell

Dishes, glasses, or cutlery coming out of the cycle covered with food or grease

Food clogging the sprayer arm
Once you know how to clean your dishwasher filter (and how quick and easy it is), try to make it a monthly habit. If you scrape or rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher, you may not need to clean the filter as often. However, for households with heavy dishwasher use, more frequent cleaning may be necessary to maintain optimal performance.
Don’t forget the rest of your dishwasher
Cleaning the filter is just one part of dishwasher maintenance. While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to clean your dishwasher too, so it stays fresh and performs at its best. Use the Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner to do just that.
